Elizabeth Dunning Baxter of Wyndmoor, PA died on April 8 after a protracted, courageous and gritty battle with brain disease. Born in Philadelphia on December 5, 1979, she was 36 years old. Growing up in Chestnut Hill and Wyndmoor “Betsy” attended Springside School, Penn Charter and subsequently graduated from Springfield (M) TWP High School. An “A” student, she impressed her teachers with her independence, intellectual prowess and a curiosity and thirst to always want to know more. She read constantly and was never far from her books. At the University of Oregon, in Eugene, she continued her academic bent, attaining Dean’s List and Academic Honor societies her freshman year. She loved Art History and Constitutional Law and scored well on the Law SATs. She aspired to law school but the advancing power of depression and addiction began to sabotage this and other dreams. After living and working as a litigation paralegal in Portland, OR for a few years she returned to Philadelphia. Betsy read and wrote continuously, surrounded by books and her omnipresent journal/diary. She created intricate drawings with pencil, pen and ink and formulating poetry of amazing depth and power. While her creations invariably spoke of the demons that pursued her, they oft concluded with striding toward “the Light”. She had the words FIAT LUX, “Let there be Light” tattooed on her arm. She was an avid football fan, pro and college, (Go Eagles…Go Ducks!) she loved touring art museums and dogs and cats (especially her Margot and Maizie). A “beach baby” from birth she had salt water in her veins and was rarely happier than when she was at “her” cottage in Beach Haven, NJ. She loved vacations in Maine, camping and sailing. She was an excellent swimmer and did so competitively at PC where she also played lacrosse and field hockey. Betsy was a head strong and powerful woman, fighting hard and valiantly to the very end. As the disease enveloped her and she could fight no more, she did indeed find the Light. She ascended to it and is there now…safe from the pain of depression and addiction that can only exist in darkness. Loving daughter, sister and mother, Betsy is survived by her daughter Violet Urbany, parents Nancy and Justin, her “favorite” brother J. Morgan and several aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service for Betsy will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 22 East Chestnut Hill Ave., in Chestnut Hill on Wednesday April 20 at 11:00 AM. In Betsy’s memory, a donation to the Mental Health Research organization of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

Patricia Stewart Walsh

Patricia Stewart Walsh died Thursday morning April 7th, peacefully, at home in Lafayette Hill three days after her 88th birthday. Patsy was born in Chestnut Hill in 1928 and had a typical Chestnut Hill youth, attending Springside school. Her debutante years culminated in marrying Richard “Dick” Walsh and being whisked off to post-war Germany where Dick was serving in the Army. She and Dick then spent most of their married life abroad apart from short periods in Washington, finally spending 25 years in Geneva, Switzerland where Dick worked for an international refugee organisation. Patsy was ever ready to embrace new languages and cities and to make an exciting and happy home wherever the family landed. She was a bright light in all the communities in which she lived. After the death of her mother, Dorothy Valentine Cassard, she and Dick returned to their roots in Chestnut Hill, spending their summers in their beloved summer house in Nantucket. Dick left her a widow when she was only 64. On Patsy’s return to Chestnut Hill she flung herself wholeheartedly back into the community, She will be remembered for her wonderful big parties given with flair and her great sense of fun. Ever sporty, Patsy rode horses in her youth, skied brilliantly in Switzerland and only stopped playing tennis, switching to golf in her 70’s. Her sheer dynamism will not easily be forgotten. What is less known, is the quiet charitable work she did on behalf of many valuable small causes for which she did not seek, indeed repulsed any publicity. She was, for example, a great supporter of the community sailing project in Nantucket which sought to give local island children the chance to learn to sail and not to be eclipsed by the children of the wealthy summer community and she quietly ensured that a nursery school in Mount Airy/East Falls, serving a poor community was not closed down, leaving the mothers of those children without the childcare they needed in order to be able to go out to work. It may not surprise those who knew her well that she spent generously of time (and money) volunteering to help at a shelter for abused women and unwed mothers. Passionate for the arts, she supported Philadelphia’s cultural institutions. Patsy enjoyed significant friendships with artists, such as her one-time neighbors, Violet Oakley and Edith Emerson, as well as Arthur B. Carles and the artists of his circle, including Jessie Drew-Bear, Jane Piper, Quita Brodhead, and Jean Knox Chambers. William Valerio, the Director of Woodmere Art Museum described that “Patsy was not only a visionary collector with a keen eye for important works, but she was also a respected and inspirational voice in the family of the arts in Philadelphia.” Finally, in her last four and a half years, she will be remembered for the immense bravery with which she faced partial paralysis and inability to articulate following a stroke. Her continued sense of humor and kindness to her caregivers showed a strength of character which inspired all those who loved her, not least, her Children, Richard Stewart Walsh and Valentine Walsh Child; her grandchildren Findlay Stewart Walsh, Paisley Valentine Walsh and Olivia Heather Walsh, her long -time companion Marylin Correia and her little terrier Betty-Boop. She is sorely missed. Her Funeral took place at St Paul’s Church, Chestnut Hill on April 18th burial at St Thomas’s Whitmarsh. Should you wish to give to a charity on her behalf then please give to any charity of your choice helping poor and disadvantaged children.

Joseph Howard Pinchuk of El Segundo died peacefully at home with family on May 16th. He was born June 5, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Joe attended Temple University on the GI Bill as a Communications major. He was a regular performer on the summer stock circuit during school breaks, where he made lifelong friends.  He started his career with the local CBS television station, WCAU, working behind the scenes in Master Control and directing the news and other local programs. In 1978, as the television station switched to automated programming, he moved west with his family to El Segundo to be closer to his brother Alan Pinchuk of Manhattan Beach. In El Segundo he worked in the aerospace industry. In retirement he appeared as an extra in a few Hollywood films. There was always a smile on his face for family and others dear to his heart. He was quick to add a song to any situation, drawing others in to harmonize on old favorites, as well as ready to share a humorous jingle or two.  In recent years he could be seen on one of his many walks around town, and he was always happy to stop and chat with neighbors.  He put his family first in every way, with their well-being at the forefront of his thoughts. He believed in community, and in Philadelphia was active with the Boys and Girls Club, Greene Street Friends School and Green Street Friends Quaker Meeting. In El Segundo he was involved in the Cable Committee, the Garden Club and RSVP. He will be dearly missed by his family and is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Pinchuk; his brother Alan Pinchuk and wife Judy; his 3 daughters, Miriam Pinchuk and her husband Rupert Clayton, Melissa (Pinchuk) Fisher and Sandy Fisher, and Julia (Pinchuk) McCormick, as well as 2 grandsons, Max and Peyton McCormick A celebration of his life will be held later. Donations in his name may be made to The Nature Conservancy Kauaʻi Program or Greene Street Friends School in Philadelphia.
